Achievement Unlocked - Technical Marketing Architect, Automation

Using Packer to Automate vSphere Template Builds

This weekend I discovered Packer from HashiCorp. And My World Was Changed…Just Way After Everyone Else I had decided to add a few more catalog items to vRealize Automation and realized that I didn’t have any Ubuntu templates loaded in my environment. I figured I would load up a couple builds - specifically 16.04 and 17.04. I hopped on Google and started looking for best practices around configuring a Ubuntu template and stumbled upon articles discussing automating template builds with something called Packer. Infrastructure and Management as Code - Intro to vSphere API with Python

I’ve had a few goals for learning this year. One of them has been to crack open the scripting world of Python. Knowing that the current version’s of vSphere have an incredible Python based API; but not being skilled enough to use it has been…challenging. Ultimately; I’ve wanted to utilize the API to create a number of detailed infrastructure level reports. I’ve created workarounds to complete these goals using vRealize Orchestrator - creating inserts into a SQL database that dump machine facts via custom properties. Read more
